She also gained attention for appearing at conventions dressed in a 'Red Sonja' costume. Richard Pini was bon in New Haven, Connecticut, and was initially a professional astronomer and employee with Boston's Charles Hayden Planetarium and IBM. The couple corresponded for a period of four years and got married in 1972.

The 'ElfQuest' stories describe the adventures of a group of elves searching for a new home. The stories contain autobiographical elements, set in a fairy tale world, which is vast and complicated with lots of characters. The popular saga still continues today with many spin-off series, reprints, and new mini-series.

In addition to 'Elfquest', Wendy Pini also created two issues of a comic book adaptation of the TV series 'Beauty and the Beast' (First Comics) and has illustrated occasional stories for both Marvel Comics (Epic Illustrated, Triton) and DC Comics. In 2007 she made a comic adaptation of the the Edgar Allan Poe short story 'Masque of the Red Death'.

The first saga contained 21 issues and was self published by WaRP from their headquarters in Poughkeepsie, New York, starting in the Spring of 1978 and ending in 1984. Over the years, Warp Graphics has also published the work of other authors, such as Colleen Doran, Robert Asprin and Martin Greim, and cooperated in Apple Comics between 1986 and 1990. Between 1992 and 2002 Warp launched several new 'Elfquest' spin-off series, such as 'Hidden Years', for which they worked with many other artists and writers.

In 2002, the company downsized to its original owners, Wendy and Richard Pini. The Pinis have licensed their work to DC Comics in 2003, and to Warner Bros in 2008.
