Sinawi is instrumental ensemble music based on improvisational shaman music. In Korea, different regions have developed their own sinawi versions using diverse instrument combinations, keys, jangdan (rhythm cycles) and playing styles. Namdo Sinawi, the most popular among the various regional sinawi, is based on Namdo (Korea’s Southern region) shaman music, and is characterized by intense emotional expression.
