Cuba makes developed countries responsible for climate change

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 7 (ACN) Developed countries are responsible for climate change, said Elba Rosa Perez Montoya, Cuban minister of science, technology and environment (CITMA by its Spanish acronym) in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, where the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 27) is taking place.

For this reason, developed nations must assume their commitments to provide means of implementation to the developing world, including financing, technologies and contribution to capacity building, said Perez Montoya after her arrival in the Afro-Asian country, according to the official website of CITMA.

The minister, who heads the Cuban delegation to COP 27, scheduled for November 6-18, said that the event has the particularity of coinciding with a global multisectoral crisis: environmental, economic, with marked inflation, health, energy and military, which should influence its results.

We will always be aligning our positions with the island developing countries and in general, with the largest group of developing countries, articulated by the G-77 and China, and South-South cooperation will continue to be a tool of Cuba's solidarity in these processes, she argued.

Cuba will support the efforts of developing countries to secure the financial mechanisms required to deal with the losses and damages caused by climate change and to better focus the debates on the definition of a new financial goal, based on the needs of the underdeveloped countries, the minister added.

At COP 27, the Caribbean nation will also support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions consistent with the 1.5 degree target, while recognizing that this must occur in a manner consistent with the needs of sustainable economic and social development in our countries.

Representatives and experts from CITMA and the foreign ministry make up the national representation attending this summit meeting in order to analyze, reach consensus and commitments and take action in order to achieve the world's collective climate goals, reached in the framework of the Paris Agreement.
