In a emotional ceremony, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel paid tribute to Malcolm X, outstanding activist for civil rights and human rights in the United States.  The ceremony took place at the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, in New York City.

President Diaz-Canel highlighted the intense activity of Malcolm X as a fighter for social justice and the rigths of African-Americans, as well as his firm commitment and solidarity with the liberation movements of the African continent.

The President also referred to the mentions of the Cuban Revolution made by Malcolm in several of his speeches.  He considered it an epic and true reference in the people´s struggle for freedom and independence.

The ceremony became an act fo solidarity, which gathered neighbours of the sorrounding area and from Harlem, a community with which Cuba has longlasting sentimental bonds.

The President of Cuba is in New York City this week to attend the high level segment of the UN General Assembly, where he will also represent the Group of 77.
