On Monday we held in #Bonn our workshop on 'Preparing the international development job market for the future', co-organised with the Centre for Rural Development (SLE) and the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). The event brought together development alumni, recruiters, academic program leaders and more to think about the future of the development sector in Germany and challenges associated with recruitment in a complex time. Thank you to all participants for an honest exchange about what works well and what still needs improvement to help young professionals find their place in the development sector. #EADI #SLE #IDOS #InternationalCooperation #PostgradProgramme

📢 Last week, the Postgraduate Programme Research Team I "Roots and Routes: Knowledge and Career Trajectories of Kenyan and Tanzanian Agriculture Graduates", hosted its fourth and final inception workshop at Mzumbe University in Mbeya, Tanzania. This workshop is part of the ongoing research project, which examines the role of agricultural higher education in shaping labor market outcomes and rural development in East Africa. Following previous workshops at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Nairobi, JARAMOGI OGINGA ODINGA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (JOOUST) in Kisumu, and Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Morogoro, this session in Mbeya provided an opportunity to engage with agricultural graduates, faculty members, and sector experts. 💡 Over the course of the workshop, the team conducted 12 focus group discussions, covering topics such as: 🔹 Skills and competencies required in the agricultural sector and their alignment with university curricula 🔹 Emerging trends in agriculture in Tanzania, including technological developments and labor market dynamics 🔹 Gender and agriculture, exploring perspectives from both male and female graduates 🔹 Career trajectories and employment opportunities for agricultural graduates After a warm welcome, the workshop was opened by Principal Dr. Kennedy Makafu, Prof. Theobald Frank Theodory and Dr. Adrian Barongo, who emphasised the long-standing collaboration between IDOS and Mzumbe University in various research initiatives. The discussions generated valuable insights that will contribute to a better understanding of how knowledge transfer from universities to the labor market takes place and where gaps remain. 🔎 Next Steps - Expert Interviews: This week, the research team is continuing qualitative data collection through semi-structured interviews with experts in the sector. - Data Analysis: In the coming weeks, researchers from SUA, Mzumbe, JKUAT, and JOOUST will collaborate on analyzing the data collected from the survey, focus groups, and expert interviews. - Restitution Workshops: To ensure the accessibility and relevance of findings, results will be presented and discussed in Kenya and Tanzania in late April. With research activities in Tanzania and Kenya ongoing, the team looks forward to further engagement, data collection, and collaborative analysis in the coming weeks. | #SustainableDevelopment #HigherEducation #Agriculture #EastAfrica #Kenya #Tanzania #KnowledgeTransfer #LaborMarkets #TracerStudy #HigherEducation Theresa Meyer Alisha Weber Anna Holeck George Tonderai Mudimu, Stefan Adamson Julia Steinhauer Léna Sgorsaly

The Future of the Development Labour Market – Key Challenges & Opportunities The international development labour market is evolving rapidly. Financial pressures, political discourse, and shifting global power dynamics are reshaping the sector. At the same time, young professionals today are driven by new priorities—such as work-life balance and decolonial perspectives. Employers, recent graduates, and training institutions came together on 24 March for a workshop co-organised by EADI European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes, Seminar für Ländliche Entwicklung (SLE) and IDOS to discuss the future of the job market in development cooperation. Carolin Kitzmann, a recent graduate of the Postgraduate Programme for Sustainability Cooperation (PGP) and now a Senior Policy Officer at Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) highlighted entry barriers for young professionals. Key insights from discussions: ◾ Entry barriers for young professionals remain high—fewer entry-level jobs and strong competition. ◾ International graduates still face challenges entering positions in the public sector. ◾ Budget cuts in the sector could have lasting consequences for the next generation of development professionals. | #EADI #SLE #IDOS #InternationalCooperation #PostgradProgramme Dr. Dr. Margitta Minah Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH Axel Berger Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn Anna-Katharina Hornidge Sven Grimm, Simone Christ, Miriam Hollaender, Basile Boulay, Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, PTB

📖 Trump's Tariffs as a Risk for the Global South In #TheCurrentColumn, Lukas Kornherr and Clara Brandi examine the impact of tariffs on the Global South. The focus is particularly on the negative effects on the economy and how international cooperation could help mitigate these challenges. 💡 What options do countries in the Global South have in these turbulent times? 1. Bilateral trade agreements with the United States. 2. Trade agreements with other countries in the Global South. 3. A ‘WTO of the willing’. 📢 Thrilled to announce the publication of our long-awaited book, “The Making of an International Investment Facilitation Framework: Legal, Political and Economic Perspectives,” now available #openaccess by Cambridge University Press. https://lnkd.in/eQYpiFTp This book, co-edited with Manjiao (Cliff) Chi, comes at a crucial time as members of the #WorldTradeOrganization are negotiating the adoption of the #InvestmentFacilitationforDevelopment (IFD) Agreement ahead of the 14th Ministerial Conference. 📌 Why is the IFD Agreement important? 👉 New Approaches: Unlike traditional investment agreements, the IFD emphasizes transparency, efficient administrative procedures, and cooperation over market access and investment protection. 👉 Development Focus: The IFD is driven primarily by emerging and developing countries aiming to better integrate into global investment flows. 👉 Inclusive Negotiations: Over 120 WTO members are participating — a testament to the broad interest in updating multilateral trade rules. 👉 While many developing countries face challenges in implementing the complex regulations, the agreement holds the potential for sustainable growth if adequate technical support is provided. 👉 The IFD Agreement could serve as a blueprint for future plurilateral negotiations, setting a new standard for collaboration in the WTO and shaping the future of global trade and investment governance. 📚 Insights from the Edited Volume: This book adopts a multidisciplinary approach and brings together researchers from all world regions, examining the IFD Agreement from legal, economic, and political perspectives. Key topics include: ⚖️ Legal Perspectives: The overlap of the IFD Agreement with traditional IIAs and its connections to other WTO agreements. 📈 Economic Analysis: Using a #ComputableGeneralEquilibrium model to estimate potential economic benefits, especially for low- and middle-income countries. 🏛️ Political Perspectives: The political dynamics behind the negotiations and the significant role of #SpecialEconomicZones in facilitating investment. 🌍 Regional Focus: Examining the influence of key players like Brazil, China, the EU, and African countries in shaping the IFD agenda. This book synthesizes a comprehensive, long-term research project at German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), led alongside the brilliant Zoryana Olekseyuk and in collaboration with partners from Columbia University, National University of Singapore, World Economic Forum (WEF), International Institute for Sustainable Development, as well as colleagues from World Trade Organization, International Trade Centre, The World Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. I am incredibly grateful to all contributors and partners who made this work possible. Looking forward to your thoughts and discussions!
