💡 "The rest of the world is likely to watch closely. The Trump administration is recasting development cooperation as an extension of domestic policy, not international obligation: a tool to project values, and reward alignment. That shift doesn’t just move the goalposts—it redraws the playing field." The Trump administration’s actions related to development policy are rooted in the “America First” doctrine. Their approach is not in line with internationally agreed objectives but narrowly aligned with perceived national interests. One of the most striking signals of this comes in the form of a 36-question survey that was distributed to international organizations and NGOs receiving USAID funding. The questionnaire focuses on recipients’ alignment with US sovereignty, national security, and economic priorities. 🔎 In their recent analysis for the Center for Global Development blog, Andy Sumner FAcSS FRSA (EADI European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes) and Stephan Klingebiel (IDOS) examine the underlying principlese that appear to be shaping the shift in U.S. development policy ⬇️ Read more in: https://lnkd.in/eXVE3eSy | #DevelopmentPolicy #Trumpism #Trump

A network of European independent think tanks working on EU international cooperation for global sustainable development.
In today's fragmented global landscape, where polarisation increasingly dominates discourse, 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹. Contemporary challenges—from climate change and energy transition to food safety, inequality, fragility and security—require bold policy actions, in addition to political will. They also demand 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. • ETTG leverages our network of over 𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁𝘀 across Europe to 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 between think tanks, multilateral organizations, EU member states, academia and civil society with the aim of 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨'𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿. As competing narratives increasingly obscure empirical realities, our independent, evidence-driven analysis provides a vital counterbalance. While our roots are European—with member organisations ECDPM 🌍, Elcano Royal Institute, IAI - Istituto Affari Internazionali, IDDRI, German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and ODI Global—our perspective is global. We have project partners from over ten Global South countries with whom we engage and co-design research and policy recommendations seen from the lens of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia. In an era of multiple, overlapping crises, the EU has the potential to be a pivotal actor in addressing global development challenges.

Hier geht es zu der Kolumne: https://lnkd.in/eVAxZp9Z ______ 📖 Democracy today is not just practised in parliaments or courtrooms, but also in digital plazas where hashtags replace headlines and solidarity is forged through shared playlists and viral posts. In #TheCurrentColumn, IDOS experts HyunAh Yi and Dennis Schüpf reflect on the role of social media in democratic processes, using the case of South Korea as an example. They emphasise: Democratic institutions require an active and participatory civil society. This calls for: ✅ Digital civic courage: Recognising and actively combating disinformation. ✅ Media literacy: Fostering critical awareness. ✅ Counter-narratives: Strong narratives that strengthen democratic values. ❓ How do EU institutions respond to evaluations of their policies by the European Court of Auditors (ECA)? To what extent do they contest or accept the evidence presented? 🚨 New publication in the Journal of European Integration: ‘We do not see the problem, but agree with your solution’: the European Court of Auditors and the politics of evaluation in EU development policy 🚨 In this article, I analysed 22 ECA performance audits in EU development policy produced since 2015 and the written responses by the European Commission and the EEAS. Here are some key findings: 👉 The ECA is indeed fulfilling its role as an independent watchdog, putting a strong focus on critical assessments of the management and efficiency of EU development policy interventions. 👉 In many cases, the evidence presented by the ECA on deficiencies in EU development policy is strongly contested by EU institutions. This suggests that the Commission and the EEAS often have very different assessments of the performance of EU development policy (not necessarily backed up by the presentation of counter-evidence). 👉 Paradoxically, there is little contestation over the policy recommendations presented by the ECA. This may partly be motivated by the strategic-political consideration that signalling the acceptance of ECA recommendations will create less controversies in discussions with the European Parliament and the Council. 👉 Overall, the findings suggest that contestation of evaluations in EU development policy is profound but also motivated by strategic-political considerations, which can explain why EU institutions still accept recommendations despite being built on an analysis that they do not agree with. 📍 Link to publication (open access!): https://lnkd.in/eqgjNjQn German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) Niels Keijzer CHRISTINE Hackenesch Stephan Klingebiel Jan Orbie Benedikt Erforth Sebastian Steingass Sebastian Haug Heiner Janus Tim Röthel Ana E. 🎉 My very first op-ed just got published in German media! In Table.Briefings, Clara Brandi and I explore the implications of Trump’s proposed “reciprocal” tariffs (for 90-days reduced to a flat additional 10% for most countries) for Least Developed Countries (LDCs). ⚠️ If the full, bizarre, formula-based tariffs are reinstated, they would disproportionately affect some LDCs, despite their minimal contribution to the US trade deficit. Why? Because the tariff formula is solely based on bilateral trade balances — and LDCs tend to: • Import little from the US (as US goods are often expensive and capital-intensive) • Export more to the US (products the US doesn’t produce — like cocoa or certain minerals — or can’t produce competitively, such as textiles) 🇪🇺 We argue that the EU should: • Prioritize multilateral responses, • Deepen mutually beneficial partnerships with the Global South, • Consider early reform and extension of its own GSP, • And design retaliatory measures carefully — your US-brand jeans might be from Lesotho, your Harley-Davidson from Thailand. 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/enXMmKTF (german only)
