Intense seismic activity continues in eastern Cuba

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Aug 16 (ACN) More than 400 aftershocks have been registered by the Network of Stations of the National Seismological Service, after an earthquake occurred in Haiti on Saturday, August 14, 2021, informed Enrique Diego Arango Arias, deputy director of the National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais).

The tremors felt, mainly in Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo, had magnitudes ranging from 4.2 to 6.0 and keep the population on alert.

According to the Cenais website, the last perceptible earthquake was at 23:20 hours on Saturday, magnitude 6.0, 201 km southeast of Maisí, at latitude 18.385 degrees north and -74.091 west longitude and 5 km deep.

The Cuban National Seismological Service continues to monitor this situation because it is very likely the continuity of the telluric movements and a 6.9 magnitude tremor has been recorded in Alaska.

Haitian authorities report so far almost 1300 deaths after the earthquake and at least 1,800 injured people, while others remain missing amid widespread damage.

Cuban health professionals present in that Caribbean nation are providing medical attention to the victims, as confirmed by the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
