Cuban easternmost province severely affected by drought

GUANTANANO, Cuba, Mar 24 (ACN) With 107,000 people affected and only 22 % filling of the main reservoirs of the territory (only 82 million cubic meters (m3), of the 347.5 million m3 of total capacity), the water supply situation in Guantanamo continues to be very tense.

This was stated by Lexis Suarez Ramirez, director of the Provincial Aqueduct and Sewerage Company, in an interview granted to Venceremos newspaper, in which he explained that in view of this situation, the main actions being worked on are the saving of the vital liquid and the eradication of leaks in the distribution networks.

The Faustino Perez dam, better known as La Esperanza, which supplies most of the capital city, has only seven out of 26 million m3, of which four are considered dead volume, to cite the most significant example, he said.

The executive added that it is not only the reservoirs that are in a serious condition, but also the large number of collapsed water supply sources, as is the case with Los Platanos and Caña Victoria in Manuel Tames, which are affecting 8,000 people, and with Maisi, where this figure is doubled.

Suarez Ramirez explained that the idea is to organize the resources where they are most needed, to mobilize the economic trucks in support of the water service and to create points of easy access, which are state or private reservoirs supplied, so that the population can be served.

He warned that it is very important that the population understands the seriousness of the situation due to the water deficit, and not to waste water, which happens in some neighborhoods where there are many social indisciplines, people who leave open spill faucets, wash cars, water gardens, illegal connections.

The current investment plan amounts to 98.6 million pesos, less than that of the previous year, of which 33 % has been executed to date, most of this money being used to mitigate, not to end or solve, the impact of the drought.
