Mecki, by Heinz Ludwig

After his art studies, Heinz Ludwig had his first publications in Die Woche and Die Lustigen Blätter from 1931. He got married in 1933, and he worked for several years as a stage designer in the opera house of Königsberg. From 1935 on, he was active as an independent painter and graphic artist in Berlin, popular for his watercolor paintings. He drew for the several magazines of the publishing houses Ullstein, Scherl and Otto Beyer. During World War II, he was in the Wehrmacht and was imprisoned in Russia for two months. After the War, he began illustrating children's books. He made several caricatures for the West-Berliner Verlage (under a pseudonym), which made him persona non grata in East Berlin. From 1963 to 1966 he drew several comics with the character 'Mecki', alternating with Reinhold Escher and Wilhelm Petersen. He died while working in 1970.
