The amount of product information has been constantly increasing over the last years. During the product lifecycle, companies create tons of information and documents: from the requirements phase over engineering to production, service, and marketing. Documents include data sheets, user manuals, marketing material, maintenance instructions, etc. In the old days, these different types of information were produced by different departments, edited in separate tools, and stored in different databases. Only in very rare cases, information was transferred between systems and could be reused. To cope with the increasing demand for up-to-date information for all available product variants, companies need to bridge the gaps between information systems and make information reusable across departments. A standardized format like DITA is the perfect basis for exchanging information between systems. By adding metadata to the content we can create intelligent information that can be adapted and retrieved according to usage scenario. Based on experiences from various customer projects, Ulrike Parson will look at approaches for using DITA and metadata as the glue between content silos and show the benefits of combining information from different systems.
